General Information
For general information concerning elections, call City Clerk

All City electors vote at the Parks and Recreation
Administration Building, 200 Devendorf Street, Elkhorn. The
building is handicapped accessible with a handicapped ramp in
close proximity to the parking spaces and the building. On
Election Day there is appropriate signage to direct voters.

Questions to Ask Yourself If You Want to Register to Vote
Are you a citizen of the United States?
Have you resided at your Elkhorn address for at least 10
days?
Under the Help America Vote Act of 2002, as of January 1,
2003, every person who registers must provide their Wisconsin
Driver’s License Number. If they do not have a driver’s license, then
they have to provide the last four (4) digits of their Social
Security Number. If they have neither, then the voter has to
indicate that on the registration card.
Acceptable Forms of Proof of Residence (for electors
registering on Election Day)
- Must contain a current and complete name, including
both the first and last name; and a current and complete
residential address, including a numbered street address, if
any, and the name of a municipality.
- Forms which have an expiration date must be valid on
Election Day in order to constitute acceptable proof of
residence at that election.
- A Wisconsin identification card
- An airplane pilot’s license
- A library card
- A Wisconsin motor vehicle operator’s license
- A university, college or technical institute fee card
- A university, college or technical institute
identification card
- Any other official identification card or license issued
by a Wisconsin government body or by an employer in the normal
course of business, not including a business card
- A residential lease which is effective for a period that
includes Election Day
- A real estate tax bill or receipt for the current year or
the year preceding the date of the election.
- A cable television, gas, electric, telephone or other
utility service statement for the period commencing not
earlier than 90 days before Election Day. NOT A CELL PHONE
BILL.
You may register to vote on Election Day with proof of
residence or before the
election at the City Clerk’s office, Monday through Friday, 8:00am
to 4:30pm. Please bring your identification. Registration 20 days
prior to the election requires proof of residency.
Registration by mail closes on the 3rd Wednesday before
the election. Voter identification must be submitted and
registration forms must be postmarked or delivered no later than
the 3rd Wednesday before the election. After that date a
voter may only register in the office of the clerk, at the
polling place or as a hospitalized elector. If you are a
first time voter in the State of Wisconsin, you are required to
provide proof of residence. Registration forms are
available at the City Clerk's office or on the Wisconsin State
Election Board website.

Voting Absentee
You may vote absentee by submitting an application for absentee
voting to the City Clerk prior to the election. Applications are
available at the front desk at City Hall. You must be a registered
voter to apply. If not registered, you may do so at that time.
If you have difficulties or are unable to get to the polling
place on Election Day, you may apply for an absentee ballot for
all elections. Ballots will automatically be sent to your
residence with instructions from the Clerk’s office prior to each
election. Again, you must be a registered voter.
Running for Public Office
If you are interested in running for Mayor, Alderman or
Municipal Court Judge, please check with the City Clerk as to
your District and Ward. Terms are two years with
Aldermanic District's 1, 2, and 5, and the Municipal Judge
running alternately with Aldermanic District's 3, 4, and 6, and
the Mayor.

Candidate’s papers are available at the City Clerk’s office the
last week of November. The Clerk provides a packet with all the
necessary papers and instructions as to how to run for office.
Potential
candidates may begin circulating nomination papers December 1 of
each year. All nomination papers and Declaration of Candidacy are due
the first Tuesday of January at 5:00pm. in the City Clerk's
office.
