Parks and Recreation

In 2001, the Common Council recognized the need to provide its rapidly growing population improved parks and expanded recreational activities. The Parks and Recreation Department was established and a Director hired.

The department has the management responsibility in the areas of parks and forestry, and recreation programming. Under the management of Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Simons, two full-time parks crewmen and a part-time secretary are responsible for the maintenance of the parks, City trees and streetscape. Seasonal limited term employees are hired during the summer to assist in the upkeep of the parks.

Playground at Sunset Park. The Director and Administrative Assistant Sara Zillmer develop and implement recreational activities for city residents and non-residents. Throughout the year, on a part time basis, the department employs a pool manager, lifeguards, summer recreation supervisor, recreation coordinator and youth recreation activity leaders.

In previous years, only summer youth activities were offered and adult softball leagues. Today, summer and winter activities are provided for all ages. Activities include team sports like baseball, softball and flag football, swimming at Sunset Pool in the summer and Elkhorn Area High School in the winter. Day trips, dance classes, Safe Sitter, music and craft classes are offered to the youth. Dance classes, exercise classes, and bingo are offered to adults.
