Fire Station

The Elkhorn Area Fire Department provides Fire and Emergency Medical Services to the City of Elkhorn and Town of Sugar Creek, as well as portions of Geneva and Lafayette townships. Its primary response responsibility totals approximately 25,000 residents across 100 square miles in Walworth County, Wisconsin. The full-time salaried staff of 26 trained employees ensures year-round coverage available 24 hours a day to assist residents in emergency situations.

The Elkhorn Area Fire Department Advisory Board advises the Common Council on matters regarding the operations of the Elkhorn Area Fire Department. The board includes representatives from the City of Elkhorn and the Towns of Sugar Creek, Geneva, and Lafayette.

The Advisory Board meets quarterly to ensure the oversight and successful operation of area emergency services. The Elkhorn Police & Fire Commission appoints the fire chief and oversees the hiring and discipline of Fire Department personnel.

The Elkhorn Area Fire Department prioritizes a "Whole Community" preparedness strategy in order to mitigate emergency incidence within both its primary jurisdiction and greater Walworth County area in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Fire Department is organized to reduce fire risk within six key priority areas: Department Administration, Fire Suppression, Fire Inspection, Fire Investigation, Emergency Management, and Education & Community Relations.

Organizational responsibilities of the Elkhorn Area Fire Department include:

  • Twice-annual inspection of the 665 commercial and multi-family buildings within its primary service area in accordance with Wisconsin State Statute
  • Regular communication and collaboration with local, county, regional, and state government agencies ensure consistency to manage its numerous emergency prevention and code enforcement efforts
  • Work with community partners on controlled outdoor burning of brush and scrub grass outside Elkhorn city limits to proactively mitigate ongoing agricultural and wildlife conservation fire risk
  • Public outreach and safety education with regular school programs, fire station tours to community organizations, extinguisher operational training to local businesses, countywide National Night Out demonstrations, and National Fire Prevention Awareness Week activities
  • CPR training classes to community groups and child safety car seat inspections are available by request
  • Provides 24/7 access to Safe Haven Baby Box (to be installed in 2024)
