Coffee with a Cop
The Elkhorn Police Department has kicked off a new program entitled Coffee with a Cop which is a national movement that aims to build trust between community members and police officers, one cup of coffee at a time.
It's a simple concept. Police and community members come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, build relationships, and drink coffee. Im over 175 cities and towns in 36 states, Coffee with a Cop has done wonders for community trust, police legitimacy and partnership building. One of the keys to Coffee with a Cop's success is that it removes the physical barriers that routinely exist between police officers and community members, allowing for the relaxed, one-on-one interactions which are necessary foundations of partnerships. Informat contact in a friendly atmosphere increases trust between police officers and members of our community which is critical to public safety and problem solving.
P.A.L.S.
The Elkhorn Police Department, together with the Elkhorn Parks and Recreation Department is offering a Police Activity & Law Session for the child that is curious or fascinated with police officers. If this is your child, they will not want to miss this hands-on opportunity to learn from real police officers. Your child will get to spend a couple of hours at the police station, inspect a patrol cars equipment, take finger prints, dust and lift fingerprints from objects, take photographs, talk with police officers, write reports, and gain an understanding of the police officers job.
Safety Town
The police department works in cooperation with the Elkhorn Area School District and offers the Safety Town program to in-coming kindergarten students during summer school. Safety Town teaches children road safety as well as other safety issues such as Mr. Yuk and poison awareness, bus safety, fire safety, and much more.
Police-School Liaison Officer Program
The Police-School Liaison Officer Program is a collaborative effort between the Elkhorn Police Department and the Elkhorn Area School District to provide a safe learning environment and reduce delinquency. The Elkhorn Police Department, in an effort to expand community-orientated policing, has dedicated a sworn police officer to the Elkhorn Area School District to further provide another valuable service to the community. The school liaison officer operates primarily from the Elkhorn Area High School, however maintains an office at the Elkhorn Area Middle School and responds to law enforcement related concerns at any of the Elkhorn Area School District’s five schools. The school liaison officer is trained to provide three specific roles within the schools: law enforcement officer, law-related counselor, and law-related education resource.
Matthew Termaat is the department’s Police School Liaison Officer and during the school year may be reached at the Elkhorn Area High School at (262)723-4920 x1613. When school is not in session, he may be reached at the police department at (262)723-2210.
Child Passenger Safety Program
The Elkhorn Police Department is dedicated to child passenger safety. The police department has officers certified as child safety seat technicians that can inspect any child safety seat. After the expiration date and recall list are checked, the seats are properly installed into the owner’s vehicle.

Child Safety Seat Safety Tips
- Never place a child under 12 years of age in the front seat with a passenger side air bag.
- Destroy a child safety seat that has been involved in a crash.
- Do not place a child in a forward facing child safety seat until the child is at least one year of age and weighs at
least 20 pounds. - Most children should be in a booster seat until they weigh 80 pounds.
Fingerprinting
As a service provided to the residents of Elkhorn, the police department will fingerprint any required state or federal forms that are needed by citizens of Elkhorn. In order to be fingerprinted on required forms, bring the blank fingerprint card(s) and proper identification to the police department lobby.
