Running for Public Office
If you are interested in running for Mayor or Alderman, contact the City Clerk to verify your District and Ward. Terms are two years with Aldermanic District's 1, 2, and 5 elected in odd years and Aldermanic District's 3, 4, 6, and the Mayor, elected in even years.
*The Municipal Judge has a term of four years, with the next election in 2023.
***Due to a vacancy the City of Elkhorn will hold a Special Election for the office of Municipal Judge in the Spring Election 2024.
Candidate papers are available below around mid to late November. The packet has all the necessary forms and instructions.
Once a decision has been made to run for office, candidates shall file with the City Clerk a completed Campaign Registration Statement (CF-1, which is in the packet below.) Each year, the City Clerk receives calls from the local media asking for names of candidates so that they may contact them for news articles. If the City Clerk has your CF-1 on file, she will provide the media with your contact information. Once this form is completed and provided to the City Clerk, potential candidates may begin circulating nomination papers on December 1 of each year. Please note that Elkhorn is considered a 4th Class City.
All nomination papers and Declaration of Candidacy are due by Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 5:00 p.m. in the City Clerk's office.
