About Us
In 2001, the Common Council recognized the need to provide its rapidly growing population improved parks and expanded recreational activities. The Parks and Recreation Department was established and a Director hired.
The Department, which is staffed by the Recreation Program Director, Recreation Supervisor and an Administrative Assistant are responsible for the development, delivery, and administration of all city-sponsored recreational programs as well as scheduling the use and rental of park facilities such as the Lions Den. Park properties and facilities are maintained by a two-person crew under the direction of the Department of Public Works.
The Recreation Director, Recreation Supervisor and Administrative Assistant develop and implement recreational activities for city residents and non-residents. Throughout the year, on a part time basis, the department employs a pool manager, lifeguards, and youth recreation activity leaders.
In previous years, only summer youth activities were offered and adult softball leagues. Today, there are programs offered year round for all ages. Activities include team sports such as baseball, softball, and flag football, swimming at the new, heated Sunset Pool in the summer and Elkhorn High School in the winter. Day trips, dance classes, Safe Sitter, music classes, exercise classes, instructional sports, swimming lessons, play groups, summer camps, events and art classes to name a few. The Elkhorn Recreation Department has an activity for every age and ability level! If you have a suggestion for an activity or event, let us know!
